The summer read for our staff this Summer 2018 was on the topic of Restorative Justice and its place in a school setting. We read two books Restorative Justice for Schools by Amstutz and Mullet and Better than Carrots or Sticks by Smith, Fisher, and Frey. The traditional approach to rule breaking or discipline is typically to give a consequence to the person who broke the rule and most of the time the victim does not have a big role in the process. In the mindset of restorative practices, the person who caused the harm has to find a way to repair his/her wrongdoing and is accountable to the person he/she caused harm to. It also reflects upon the larger picture and addresses how the community as a whole is affected. Something that students can practice is expressing how they feel when a situation happens to them. In counseling we often refer to these as "I statements".
Some feeling sentence starters suggested from the book that help guide conversations are (Smith, Fisher, & Frey , 2015, p. 101-102): 1. It is important for people to understand the feeling or emotion they are experiencing and make the connection to the event that made them feel this way. This is based Pavlov Classical Conditioning where there is a stimulus and a response. At Green, the counselors and staff often have students reflect by saying, I felt _____________ when you ____________ . We even take it a step further in order to find a compromise/solution by adding the statement I need/would like____________________.
