It is part of life to feel nervous, worried, or anxious with upcoming events, people, or locations. This happens when the amygdala in our brains perceives a threat and involves the limbic system to fight, flight, or freeze. Through experience, practice, repetition our bodies learn to feel comfortable with locations, equipment, settings, etc. . . The poster below shares tips on how parents/guardians can assist their children in learning how to manage anxiety/stress.

It is never too early to start the conversation with your child(ren) about what are some things they may want to do in the future. Most people will often ask, "what would you like to be when you grow up", but that often has students trying to pick a particular job and they may find it difficult. Another question to ask would be, "what would you like to do", this question directs students to think about what tasks or skills they may want to perform. The majority of students will then explain qualities or skills that they perceive they are good at. At Green, we often use the book What Shoes Will You Wear by Julia Cook. The book presents the notion that different jobs require different shoes along with specific skill sets.
Our families are strong pillars for our students and the conversation can extend to the home about future careers. If you are interested in a question guideline please see the link below and ask/answer the questions under the student and family columns. https://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/Publications/ESCareerConversations.pdf As we approach EOG testing, remind students that they will be tested on material that they have been learning this academic year. The test is to be taken serious, but it is not something to get stressed about. Let's be confident in our abilities and use positive affirmations to put us in a positive mindset. Positive affirmations are encouraging words such as "I got this", "I believe in myself", or "I will get it my best". Encourage your student to come up with a positive affirmation that works for them.
5th Grade Parents-
Thank you for the patience and understanding with Middle School Registration! This year our school completed elective registration as many schools in our district do, online. We expect that you will be part of the process and review elective choices online with your child at wcpss.net/rising6th. Green Staff is thrilled that your child is hitting another milestone and preparing for middle school! LIFE IS 10% WHAT HAPPENS TO US AND 90% HOW WE REACT TO IT. |
